JOHN EDWARDS: UNDERDOG FOR
PRESIDENT
Speed of lightning,
roar of thunder, fighting those who rob or plunder...
John Edwards has continually polled
third (or even fourth) in his race for the 2008 Democratic
nomination for President. The former U.S. Senator from North
Carolina has carved a niche for himself by speaking out about
poverty and economic disparity. This might seem a unique subject for
Mr. Edwards when he is said to be the wealthiest of the Democratic
field with a personal fortune of up to $60 million (according to
some sources). But, Edwards earned his money and was not born into
wealth like so many other prominent politicians.
John Edwards childhood was a hard one.
His father worked as a floor worker at a mill and his mother was,
for a period, a letter carrier. Here's an interesting article about
the "rags" part of Edwards' "rags to riches" story
(here).
This income disparity problem is an
underreported issue. There is no denying that in this country as the
rich have been getting richer the poor have grown poorer. Because he
has seen both sides, Edwards has done the best job of bringing this
issue to light. I think this qualifies as political courage. At a
time when donation totals are seen as the leading indicator of a
candidate's viability, Edwards continues to swim upstream. |
