GOP Bag Man: Jack Abramoff

These days, he's known as Washington's most notorious lobbyist, but Jack Abramoff has earned his infamy with an impressive career in the graft and corruption industry.  Among his low-lights is bilking Native American tribes of more than $60 million while referring to his suckers as "troglodytes."  Pretty scummy.  I guess all the schemes to steal from widows and orphans had no appeal.

Abramoff must have been quite an actor to get all that cash from the same people he referred to in this, now public, email, "I think the key thing to remember with all these clients is that they are annoying, but that the annoying losers are the only ones which have this kind of money and part with it so quickly."

Abramoff, Chairman of the College Republicans in 1981, was once disqualified from a middle-school student election for exceeding the spending limit.  The Principle said that Abramoff had thrown a party for students that amounted to vote buying.  Even in those early days there beat the heart of a true neo-con in little Jack, future Bush Pioneer .

He met Tom Delay ten years ago and they quickly came to see a beneficial use for one another.  While Abramoff was shoveling money in DeLay's direction, DeLay was just as busy on his side shoveling praise, access and favorable legislation in Abramoff's direction.  The results of this ten year shovel-off is that DeLay and Abramoff have been the big winners to the detriment of America.

Until now.

Finally, it seems that DeLay, Abramoff, Libby and others like them (possibly Rove) will finally be held responsible for their malfeasance.  DeLay seems to have forgotten all about his old chum, Abramoff, in much the same way that Republicans in Washington will soon start forgetting their own relationship with DeLay.

"Say, didn't he used to spray for bugs around here?"

*  Here's a good source on the GOP Bag Man at wikipedia.

* Here's a run down of his past misdeeds at thinkprogress.

Don't be so sure this a GOP scandal.  There are plenty of Democrats on the donate list the Indians were given.

HE

I suppose it is possible, but keep in mind that Abramoff is a life long Republican.

Another point is that it is not illegal to take money from special interests, just to promise legislation outcomes in exchange.  I think this is what we're talking about.  There was one incident when Congressman (for now) Ney, R from OH, jumped into this matter of Abramoff purchasing a gambling boat in Florida.  Ney's interest followed immediately after a shady financial deal was reached with the GOP Bag Man.

I still say the Democrats are just as guilty as the Republicans.

HE

When your only defense is, "The other guys do it." then you aint got a defense.

I hope all the crooks on his pay roll do time.  Maybe now they can restore integrity to the Federal Penitentiary system.

Nice sketch, Free.  Any theories on why he wears the 1940s hat?

RB

He's an Orthodox Jew and may feel compelled to cover his head when outdoors.

He came to court the second day in a ball cap.  His people must have told him that he looked like Bugsy Seigel.  But, the gangster's fedora is perfect for him.  And that two-day beard ..... works well.

Will he really bring down the GOP?

CK

Well, probably not.  He'll send some corrupt public officials to jail, but I think his party will survive him.  They may even benefit in a strange way.  This is such an outrage that they can no longer bury their heads in the sand.  I expect the un-indicted Republicans to make a big show of shaking their finger at the crooks (former friends one and all.)

He has to have something interesting to say.  I understand he's getting a 60 year sentence reduced to 9.  That is quite a bargain for a major thief like him.
